PCV alert: Venezuelan right trying to create a picture that will lead to civil war
Caracas, April 15, 2013, Tribuna Popular - The Political Bureau of the Communist Party of Venezuela (PCV), analyzing the electoral results in Venezuela yesterday, warned the people that the national and international fascist right, along with imperialism, are trying to ambush the people and the democratic process to create a picture that will lead to civil war.
So said Oscar Figuera, general secretary of the PCV, of the opposition’s refusal to recognize the results of the presidential elections.
“We denounce Guillermo Aveledo, Capriles and their whole machine, for trying to ambush our people and the Venezuelan democratic process, in the same way as in April 2002 when they were part of the forces that rebelled against the state of change and the democratic process,” said Figuera.
For the PCV it is important that the Venezuelan people keep track of the pseudo-democratic character of the mood destabilizing coup and the leadership that acts in opposition today.
“We see this in the fact that the opposition candidate did not recognize the results, even when they know that these are the results, because if 54% of the machines were audited and everything was fine and endorsed by his own witnesses, what does he hope to get from the other 46%?” asked the Communist leader.
The Communist Party denounced the pro-imperialist right for trying to create an atmosphere of doubt about the governing body of the electoral process and the public results “and take time to promote exasperation in the village,” said Oscar Figuera.
Figuera recalled that a few days ago, Guillermo Aveledo said he expected the government to respect the results. “Ah, they demand that the government respect the results, but they are not willing to respect them. That’s part of that pseudo-democratic behavior of a masked coup already demonstrated in April 2002. The actors are not new. There has been a high level of impunity.”
The PCV leader said the game the opposition is playing s definitely to ignore the election results. ”They’re trying a conspiratorial design, aimed at destabilizing and creating conditions for putting the country into an open, fratricidal confrontation and for making visible the invisible hand of U.S. imperialism and paramilitary groups they have planted in our country through the Venezuelan and international right-wing,” explained Figuera.
The Communist Party called on those who voted for Nicolas Maduro “to act with the political maturity that the times demand, rejecting any kind of provocation and plan that is intended to produce a picture of confrontation and destabilization or general crisis and make Venezuelan society ungovernable.”
He added that “there are mechanisms and ways to make the election results more and more transparent, with immense participation of our people, and not allow manipulation or provocation to pull the Venezuelan political process out of its natural development to where the opposition can take the lead.”
The Communist leader said that given the gravity of the moment, “in the early hours of today, we alerted our cadres across the country to remain alert and activated to prevent counter-revolutionary, reactionary, unpatriotic and pro-imperialist actions that seek to create a box that leads to civil war.”

Unbeknownst to most is that the language activism of Drop the I-Word and the immigrant rights movement that informed it was itself a continuation of the work begun- en Español- by Salvadorans organizing the “Nigun Ser Humano Es Ilegal”campaign in the 1980′s. In support of the right of Salvadorans in the 1980′s to legal status in the U.S. under international political asylum statutes, Nobel Prize-winning novelist Elie Wiesel gave the Salvadoran sanctuary movement the now storied phrase, “No Human Being is Illegal.” “Yes, I gave that term to the Sanctuary movement, Wiesel told me some years ago. “It was wrong to deny them (Salvadorans and Guatemalans) (legal) status. I was happy to support the cause.” And there, in the marriage of Jewish and Salvadoran dignities, was born the beginning of the end of the ignoble term “illegal immigrant.”

You know who is totally badass and completely under-rated? Valerie.
These days, most we see of Valerie is that Archie marries her (as well as both Betty and Veronica) in one of those alternate future thingies.
But Valerie in her early years was a smart, badass feminist who took no nonsense from anyone. She was very protective of her friends, knew when someone was lying, and was a strong defender of equal rights. Those typical tricks goofy teenage characters fall for in comics? She was having none of that.

An excellent write-up about Val. I’ve always wanted to write about her interesting history cartoon and comic wise, but the writer did a lot better of a job doing that than I ever could.
